"There were some tenor players before Hawkins, but the instrument was not an acknowledged jazz horn", says music journalist Joachim-Ernst Berendt. Ben Webster however, another saxophone ambassador, quickly showed himself worthy to match the Hawk: Their dueling on the 1959 recording proves this as it continues to be a must-have in every jazz lover’s collection. When Jesper Thilo and Jan Harbeck meet in Montmartre it will be in the spirit of the two tenor sax giants, but it will also be an encounter that shows the best of two generations. Young Harbeck is busy playing all the big band orchestras, recently at Montmartre for New Year’s Eve with Ernie Wilkins Almost Big Band. Thilo, a longtime Danish sax favorite and the first to receive the Ben Webster Award in 1977, plays for three nights at Montmartre; two nights in a Coleman-Webster tribute and one night only with his own quartet. -M-
