The National bag stort hyldest-album til The Grateful Dead

Det legendariske amerikanske rockband Grateful Dead har spillet en stor rolle i brødrene Aaron og Bryce Dessner fra The Nationals musikalske opvækst. De har nu samlet et stjernespækket hold musikere til en storslået hyldest af et tribute-album. "Day of the Dead" udkommer den 20. maj 2016 på 4AD / Playground Music i Skandinavien og består af intet mindre end 59 sange, samlet set cirka seks timers musik. Se tracklisten her forneden.

For både Aaron og Bryce har Grateful Dead projektet været en mulighed for at spille musik sammen, og vel at mærke den første musik brødrene var dybt inspirerede af. Brødrene husker stadig deres tidlige jam-session i 14-års alderen med vennen, og senere bandkammerat i National, Bryan Devendorf, spille Deads "Eyes of the World" i adskillige timer i Bryans garage i forstæderne i Ohio.

Udarbejdelsen af "Day of the Dead" er en omfattende hyldest til Gateful Deads sangskrivning og eksperimentalisme. Det har taget 4 år at indspille albummet, der inkluderer over 60 artister med forskellig musikalsk baggrund. Albummet er produceret af Aaron Dessner og co-produceret af Bryan Dessner og Josh Kaufman. Og blandt de prominente medvirkende er grupper som War On Drugs, Wilco, Kurt Vile, Courtney Barnett, Anohni, Flaming Lips, The National og mange andre.

"Day of the Dead" udkommer digitalt, og som 5xCD den 20. maj 2016. Senere på året vil albummet også udkomme som et limiteret boks-sæt. Alt overskud fra pladen går til at hjælpe i kampen mod AIDS / HIV og helbredsrelaterede sygdomme i verden. Det sker gennem organisationen Red Hot Organization, der har som mission at hjælpe i kampen mod AIDS / HIV gennem popkultur.
